The Kidneys: Reservoir of Essence

Even if our experience of living on this rock is tinged by the restless, violent overtones of the mechanistic mindset, the island is constantly overflowing with a graceful undercurrent that can aptly be called gestational. Perhaps, in addition to co-existing in an era of crisis and uncertainty, many of us who have found a home here, have done so with the shared purpose of being inoculated with an appreciation for the slow ripening discovery of our inborn, authentic identities.

The future of the Co-op: What happens when Eric leaves?

When I have told people that my family and I are leaving the island, many have said “But what is the Co-op going to do without you?” As always, I have a plan for that. First, I admit that there is never a good time to leave, but this certainly isn’t a bad time. Even without me, the current Supervisor team has 30 years of experience making the Co-op the best it can be.

Farewell from Eric

On April 14th, I announced to the staff that my last day with the Co-op would be Friday, May 21st. It is time for Nathaniel and Esiana to go to high school, so we are moving to Powell River this summer. We did not take this decision lightly. Cortes has been our home for the past nine years, and I’ve devoted nine years to making the Co-op the best place it could be.

This is a delicious and easy meal. Substitutions are easy and any time we eat this supper we enjoy it immensely.

The Lungs: Microcosm of the Dao

A profound privilege exists in living in a place resembling a natural Eden, as it offers the opportunity to go out and reorient ourselves by its chaotic order when we feel full. The ephemeral beauty in the crystalline lattice of a single snowflake as it falls before our eyes, and dissolves seconds after touching the body, evokes Metal’s message of reduction into a state of pure simplicity, and awakens an ancestral memory of Winter’s complete embrace.

Deli Drinks!

The new year has brought new offerings in the newly stocked Cortes Co-op Deli and Espresso Bar. Our focus has been on natural and delicious products from local/regional sources. I hope you will enjoy our selection of BC-made beverages.

Matters of the Heart

In TCM, the power of assimilation is associated with the individual’s power of discernment and differentiation, not only through the body’s metabolic functions, which sorts our food matter from the crude to the finite, but also in finding a balance between a sense of self and a sense of other. As in all forms of holistic medicine, balance is key. But how is this balance achieved?

The global food system is as mind-boggling of a creature to fathom as it ever was, now only increasingly so in the context of climate change.
