In order to promote locally made/grown products and to support our local economy, the Co-op purchases local products and sells them at a cost-recovery basis (for labour, refrigeration and shelf space). Local veggies are sold at a 15% mark-up and all other products (fish, nuts, crafts, body-care items, etc) are marked up by 20%. The lower markup for produce is a financial acknowledgment of the amount of unrecoverable labour in growing food and serves as additional support for our local producers.
Since 2008, our Summer Monday Market initiative means that 100% of the sale of local produce sold on the front porch is given to the grower. The growers can show up without prior notice to display their produce.
